ECB Unveils Pontes System for Central Bank Money Settlements
The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched Pontes, a system that enables financial institutions to settle tokenized asset transactions in central bank money. This move aims to provide an alternative to private settlement assets such as stablecoins.
Pontes is part of the Eurosystem's strategy for tokenized finance and initially offers a core set of services. Full implementation is expected by 2028, with a focus on making wholesale transactions faster and more efficient.
The ECB believes that Pontes will help to scale the European tokenised finance ecosystem by bringing the stability and trust of central bank money to the platform. This could make it easier for institutions to adopt tokenized finance.
