ECB Unveils Shortlisted Designs for New Euro Banknotes

The European Central Bank (ECB) has unveiled the designs for new euro banknotes, marking one of the final stages in selecting the next visual identity of the currency. Over 1,200 design proposals were reviewed by the ECB's governing council before two main themes emerged as finalists: European culture and natural heritage.

The culture-focused designs highlight figures who have shaped European achievements in art, music, science, and literature. The nature-themed proposals feature rivers and birds that cross national borders, representing Europe's biodiversity and environmental protection.

Five different design proposals were created for each theme, ranging from modern minimalist approaches to traditional artistic interpretations. If the culture theme is selected, new euro banknotes will feature influential figures such as Maria Callas, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Marie Curie. The nature-inspired alternative features European birds alongside a river landscape.

The public vote marks one of the final stages in selecting the new euro banknote designs, which are expected to enter circulation from the end of 2026. The initiative comes as the ECB continues developing the digital euro, with the project advancing through negotiations at the European Parliament after lawmakers held a vote on the issue.
