ECB's Musical Chairs: A New Leadership Era Dawns in 2027
The European Central Bank (ECB) is on the cusp of a major overhaul as three seats on its six-seat Executive Board are set to change hands between May and December 2027. The most significant seat up for grabs is that of President, currently held by Christine Lagarde, who has kept open the possibility of leaving before her term ends in October 2027.
The current Chief Economist, Philip Lane, will leave his position in May 2027, followed by Market Operations head Isabel Schnabel in December. However, Schnabel's departure is actually scheduled to take place on January 3, 2027, as she has already accepted a senior job at the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The candidates for the three seats are still being narrowed down, but it appears that France and Germany will focus on securing two of the positions, given their slim chances of landing the presidency. According to sources, Macron would support Klaas Knot if France secured the Chief Economist role in return.
