European Central Bank Governing Council member Christodoulos Patsalides has warned that monetary policy alone cannot shield the economy from unexpected shocks. Speaking to journalists in Nicosia after addressing lawmakers on Monday, the Cypriot governor emphasized that central banks have limited power over external factors like wars, fiscal issues, or supply chain disruptions.
Patsalides’s comments come amid ongoing efforts by the ECB to manage inflation through higher interest rates. Despite these measures, he cautioned that such policies cannot address broader systemic challenges that impact economic stability.
The remarks highlight the constraints faced by central banks in mitigating risks that fall outside their direct control. Patsalides’s perspective underscores the need for coordinated efforts across different sectors to tackle complex economic issues effectively.
