European Central Bank Governing Council member Olaf Sleijpen warned on Monday that the opportunity to curb global warming in line with the Paris Agreement’s goals is rapidly fading. Speaking in Manila, Sleijpen emphasized that the scientific data indicates the remaining carbon budget to limit warming to 1.5°C is nearly depleted.
According to Sleijpen, the world is now facing a critical choice between two stark outcomes: one that is still manageable, albeit severe, and another that could spiral beyond control. He stressed that the window for effective action is closing, urging immediate and decisive measures to mitigate the worst impacts of climate change.
The remarks highlight the growing urgency for global cooperation to address climate challenges, as the consequences of inaction become increasingly dire. Sleijpen’s comments underscore the need for policymakers and institutions to prioritize sustainable practices before the situation worsens further.
