Egypt, World Bank Advance IFGF for Private Infrastructure Investment
Egypt and the World Bank are advancing the Infrastructure Financing Guarantee Facility (IFGF), a mechanism designed to support long-term infrastructure financing and attract private-sector investment. The development of the IFGF is part of Egypt's broader structural economic reform efforts, aiming to increase private-sector participation and turn public-private partnerships into practical investment opportunities.
The IFGF will provide innovative, long-term financing solutions in local currency while reducing investment risks. This is expected to ease pressure on the state budget and improve the efficiency of public spending. The facility will focus on key productive and service sectors, particularly renewable energy, water treatment and desalination plants, and modern transportation projects.
Representatives from international financial institutions such as the African Development Bank, European Investment Bank, and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank expressed strong interest in joining the new mechanism and contributing guarantees and financing solutions needed to support its implementation. The World Bank team presented a detailed update on the project's implementation, including the stages required to launch the facility and the timeline for its operational rollout.
The IFGF is expected to create a framework for mobilizing long-term local-currency financing while reducing investment risks in strategic sectors, potentially expanding the role of private capital in Egypt's infrastructure development. The mechanism reflects the growing strategic partnership with the Egyptian government, emphasizing the World Bank's commitment to bringing international expertise to help reduce financing risks and provide technical and advisory support aimed at attracting major private-sector companies to Egypt's infrastructure projects.
