Energy Prices Set to Fuel Interest Rate Hike as Inflation Bites
Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has expressed concerns that prolonged high energy prices could lead to an increase in interest rates. He warned that elevated energy costs, driven by Middle East conflicts, present significant risks to the current low interest rate environment. The Bank's forecast suggests inflation will rise to around 3.7% in the fourth quarter of this year and 4.2% in the first quarter of 2027.
The upcoming 4% increase in the household energy price cap is expected to contribute to these rising inflationary pressures. Economists believe that the central bank will likely raise interest rates later this year to curb inflation and return to its official 2% target.
