EU Promotes Global Circular Economy Through International Cooperation

The European Union is taking steps to promote a global circular economy, recognizing that it cannot achieve its climate-neutral and resource-efficient goals alone.

The EU's Circular Economy Action Plan emphasizes the importance of international cooperation in advancing a global circular economy. The plan highlights several key areas where the EU will focus its efforts, including bilateral and multilateral policy dialogues, fora and agreements, and development and international cooperation programs.

One concrete example of this international cooperation is the Global Alliance on Circular Economy and Resource Efficiency (GACERE). Launched by the European Commission in coordination with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), GACERE brings together governments, networks, and organizations to identify knowledge and governance gaps in advancing a global circular economy.

The EU will also use its influence, expertise, and financial resources to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the EU and beyond. Additionally, it will ensure that Free Trade Agreements reflect the enhanced objectives of the circular economy and step up outreach activities through European Green Deal diplomacy and Circular Economy Missions.
