EUR/USD Pair Slips as Stronger PCE Data Boosts US Dollar

The EUR/USD pair slipped against the US dollar on Friday after the release of the US Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index, which came in above market expectations. Analysts at Danske Bank noted that the surprise in the inflation data has prompted a reassessment of the Federal Reserve's policy path, strengthening the greenback and pressuring the EUR/USD pair.

The core PCE price index rose more than forecast for the reported month, signaling persistent price pressures. This development challenges the narrative of imminent rate cuts, leading to a repricing in the futures market. As a result, the US dollar gained traction against major currencies, with the euro bearing the brunt of the shift.

Danske Bank analysts reinforced their view that the Federal Reserve will maintain a higher-for-longer stance, delaying any potential easing cycle. This contrasts with the European Central Bank's outlook, which has been more open to rate adjustments given softer economic momentum in the eurozone.

The policy divergence between the Fed and the ECB is a key driver for the exchange rate. While the US economy continues to show resilience, the eurozone faces weaker growth prospects, making the euro less attractive to investors.
