Euro Adoption Brings Quiet Changes to Bulgaria's Digital Payments Scene
Bulgaria's adoption of the euro as its official currency has brought significant changes to the way people shop and make transactions. Since January 1, 2026, Bulgaria has been a full member of the eurozone, replacing the lev with the euro as its national currency.
The rollout was not just symbolic; households across the country received euro coin starter kits in the weeks leading up to the changeover. These kits allowed people to become familiar with the size and weight of the new coins before they became mandatory for cash transactions.
However, it's worth noting that card and mobile payments already account for the majority of retail transactions across the EU, including Bulgaria. The adoption of the euro barely touches on cash at all, making it a relatively smooth transition for most people.
