Euro Area Banks Pass Geopolitical Stress Test, But Weaknesses Remain

The European Central Bank conducted its annual geopolitical risk stress test on major euro-area banks and found that 110 out of them could design credible scenarios tailored to their own risks. This exercise, which is part of the bank's ongoing efforts to assess financial institutions' resilience to global events, revealed some weaknesses in how these banks assess detailed impacts and link capital and liquidity pressures. The ECB will use this data to inform its discussions with banks, but it won't change the current capital guidance for these institutions. While the results show that euro-area banks are better equipped to handle geopolitical crises than before, there's still room for improvement.
