Euro Area Households Lag Behind in Long-Term Investment

The European Central Bank (ECB) has sounded the alarm on euro area households keeping too much of their wealth in cash and low-yield deposits. Around one-third of euro area household financial assets, worth almost €10 trillion, remain in these types of accounts.

According to the ECB, around 80% of households do not own stocks or other market-based financial instruments, with participation substantially lower than in the United States. The difference is particularly pronounced among wealthier households, with over 65% of the wealthiest 20% of US households holding listed shares, bonds, or mutual funds compared to less than 45% in the euro area.

For Cyprus, this issue is especially relevant as households continue to hold substantial sums in bank deposits. Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) governor Christodoulos Patsalides has previously stated that Cyprus consistently ranks among the EU countries with the lowest levels of financial literacy, with young people recording the weakest performance among age groups.

The ECB's analysis found that financial knowledge, perceived risk, and trust are major barriers to investment, particularly among households not financially constrained. It also noted that limited understanding of financial products can contribute to low trust and heightened perceptions of risk, making financial literacy a crucial factor in whether households participate in capital markets.
