Euro Area Inflation Surges on High Energy Prices
Inflation rates surged in key euro area countries, including Germany and France, due to persistent high energy prices. The latest data showed that Germany's annual inflation rate rose to 3.3% in September, its highest level in nearly three years. France followed closely with a 3.4% inflation rate, while Italy saw a higher rate of 4.1%. Spain reported an even more significant price growth of 5%, according to data published today.
The sharp increase in inflation has added to bond-market jitters, particularly as the French government prepares to unveil its 2027 budget draft tomorrow. This development puts another interest rate hike by the European Central Bank (ECB) back into focus. The ECB Governing Council is expected to select a new design for euro banknotes around the end of the year.
