Euro Area Monetary Growth Hits 3.5% in August, Driven by Short-Term Deposits
The European Central Bank (ECB) released its latest monetary developments report for August 2026, highlighting key trends in the euro area's financial landscape.
The annual growth rate of the broad monetary aggregate M3 stood at 3.5% in August 2026, up from 3.4% in July and averaging 3.4% over the past three months.
Breaking down the components of M3, the narrower aggregate M1, which includes currency in circulation and overnight deposits, saw a decrease to 2.9% in August from 3.1% in July. In contrast, short-term deposits other than overnight deposits (M2-M1) increased to 4.1% in August from 3.7% in July.
The ECB also reported that the annual growth rate of adjusted loans to households remained unchanged at 3.1% in August, while adjusted loans to non-financial corporations decreased to 4.2% in August from 4.4% in July.
