Euro Banknote Design Survey Draws Record-Breaking Response from Almost 10 Million People
The European Central Bank (ECB) has concluded its public consultation on the design of new euro banknotes, which will start circulating in 2030. The survey garnered an impressive response from almost 10 million people, representing around 2.6% of the citizens of the euro area.
Of those who participated, approximately two-thirds were under the age of 35. The ECB has stated that it will use standard statistical methods to ensure that the conclusions accurately reflect the population of the euro area.
The survey was conducted between July 23 and September 21, 2026. Participants were asked to rate a list of ten possible design lines, which focused on European culture and rivers and birds.
Another survey is being finalized, targeting a representative sample of residents in the euro area, managed by an independent research firm. The results from both surveys will be used in conjunction with recommendations from an independent jury and technical analysis to inform the ECB's decision on the final design concept.
