Euro Banknote Redesign: A Choice Between Culture and Nature

The European Central Bank (ECB) is closing its online consultation on Monday, September 21st, as it seeks to choose a new design for the euro banknotes. Ten proposals have been shortlisted, representing two broad themes: one centered around European cultural figures and public spaces, and another featuring rivers and birds across the continent.

The 'European culture' concept pairs each denomination with a historical figure and a contemporary setting, such as Maria Callas on the €5 note or Leonardo da Vinci on the €100. In contrast, the 'Rivers and birds' theme uses shared ecosystems instead of personalities, showcasing species like wallcreepers and kingfishers.

The consultation is open to everyone, with anonymous responses in all 24 official EU languages. However, it's essential to note that this is not a binding ballot, and the final decision will be made by the ECB Governing Council based on both public responses and technical assessments.
