Euro Banknote Revamp Underway as European Central Bank Seeks New Design

The European Central Bank has begun the process of creating a new generation of euro banknotes. This change will come after citizens vote on the design proposals from July 2026 to September 21, with the final choice expected at the end of 2026.

There are currently around 31.3 billion euro banknotes in circulation, valued at approximately 1.62 trillion euros. The European Central Bank does not publish a single official price for production costs.

The new banknotes will go through several printing stages and cutting processes before being introduced into circulation, which is expected to take place after technical development and testing are complete.
