Euro Bond Yields Retreat as Oil Prices Fall Amid US-Iran Sanctions
European bond yields retreated from multi-year highs on Tuesday as oil prices declined following the latest US sanctions against Iran. Yields on German government bonds, considered a benchmark for the euro zone, fell by 3 basis points to 3.222%.
This decrease marks a reversal from last week's high of 3.275%, which was a 15-year peak. The drop in yields indicates that investors are reassessing their inflation concerns and expectations of economic growth in Europe.
Oil prices fell by 3% to $89.40 per barrel, down from the one-month high of $94.80 reached on Friday. This decline was triggered by the US sanctions against Iran, which were seen as a threat rather than immediate action.
Brent crude oil prices dropped due to reduced bets on European Central Bank rate hikes. Money markets had previously priced in 43 basis points of further ECB tightening this year, but this figure decreased slightly following the decline in oil prices.
