Euro Drops Sharply Against Pound Amid France Fiscal Concerns
The euro faced its sixth consecutive daily loss against the British pound on Monday, marking its steepest decline since mid-July. Concerns over France's fiscal outlook weighed heavily on the single currency, raising fears of a renewed sovereign debt crisis within the eurozone.
The pound gained strength against both the euro and the dollar. The British government's commitment to fiscal discipline and a more positive stance toward the European Union supported sterling. Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who has hinted at considering the UK's options regarding EU membership, contributed to this sentiment.
The euro dropped 0.41% to 84.60 pence, its lowest level in nearly three months. Meanwhile, the pound's rise was bolstered by expectations of tighter monetary policy following remarks from Bank of England officials.
Analysts noted that markets have yet to fully focus on the upcoming UK budget on October 28. However, Jane Foley of Rabobank suggested that sterling is less vulnerable to a selloff against the euro due to the current situation in France. Barclays also highlighted the pound as a key beneficiary of the widening French spreads last week.
