Euro Falters Near Record Low Despite Surging Eurozone Inflation
The euro has maintained its position near its lowest level in recent history despite stronger-than-expected inflation data from the Eurozone. The annual inflation rate accelerated to 3.8% last month, its highest since September 2023 and well above the ECB's 2% target. This increase is largely due to higher fuel prices.
Despite this renewed pressure on inflation, the euro remains under stress as markets anticipate more gradual monetary policy tightening from the ECB compared to the Federal Reserve. The next potential rate hike for the ECB is priced in over the coming year and could come as early as December.
Isabel Schnabel, an ECB Executive Board member, emphasized that the upcoming months will be crucial in assessing the impact of the energy shock on inflation and determining how high interest rates need to rise. Her comments suggest a cautious approach amidst the ongoing US-Iran conflict.
