The Euro (EUR) has regained some ground against the British Pound (GBP) on Monday, benefiting from an improved market sentiment. This shift comes as oil prices ease from recent highs and France avoids a credit rating downgrade. The EUR/GBP pair is trading just below 0.8400 at the start of the European session, recovering from Friday’s low of 0.8361. Over the past four weeks, the Euro has faced a 2.7% decline against the Pound.
The Euro is finding support from a slight retreat in oil prices, following news of Qatari mediators arriving in Tehran. This US-coordinated effort aims to reduce tensions in the region. Brent oil prices have dropped to 110.25 from near six-month highs, though they remain elevated. The potential de-escalation of conflict is easing safe-haven demand for the USD, which in turn is boosting the Euro.
Moody’s ratings agency maintained France’s Aa3 credit rating despite ongoing riots in major cities. This decision has relieved market concerns of a downgrade, leading to a sharp decline in France’s Treasury yields. The positive sentiment is providing additional support to the Euro.
Looking ahead, investors will focus on the German IFO Business Climate release on Monday. However, attention is likely to remain on the European Central Bank’s (ECB) monetary policy decision due on Thursday. Meanwhile, the Bank of England is expected to raise rates next week, which could limit further declines in the Pound.
