Euro Redesign: Public Invited to Choose New Face of Banknotes
The European Central Bank (ECB) has unveiled ten shortlisted designs for the first complete redesign of the euro banknotes since their introduction in 2002. The proposals are divided between two themes: 'European culture' and 'Rivers and birds'. Under the 'European culture' theme, each denomination would celebrate a different figure from Europe's cultural and intellectual history, including Maria Callas, Ludwig van Beethoven, Marie Curie, Leonardo da Vinci, Miguel de Cervantes, Bertha von Suttner, and others. The ECB is seeking feedback on these designs through a public survey that will run until 21 September 2026.
The redesign aims to improve security and accessibility of the banknotes, making them easier to authenticate and more accessible to visually impaired people. New features will also seek to reduce the environmental footprint of the banknotes by using more sustainable materials and production processes.
A public survey is now open for anyone to provide feedback on the designs through the ECB's website until 21 September 2026. The results of both surveys, as well as a technical assessment, will be considered before the ECB's Governing Council makes its final decision around the end of the year.
