Euro Redesign Shifts Focus from Architecture to Nature and Culture
The European Central Bank (ECB) has shortlisted 10 proposals for the redesign of the Euro banknotes, marking a shift away from architectural motifs that have been on the notes since their introduction in 2002. The designs, created by graphic designers and visual artists across Europe, reimagine the Euro with a focus on 'European culture' and 'nature'.
According to Christine Lagarde, president of the ECB, the redesign is an opportunity to reinforce the shared identity of Europeans through a tangible expression of their culture. The shortlisted designs feature cultural figures such as Maria Callas and Marie Curie, but also natural landscapes like rivers and mountain ranges.
A survey commissioned by the ECB found that 'European culture' was the most popular choice among euro area citizens, followed closely by 'Rivers: the waters of life in Europe' and 'Birds: free, resilient, inspiring'. The incorporation of natural motifs has sparked debate about their relevance to European identity.
