Euro Steadies vs Pound as German Uncertainty and Oil Prices Offset Each Other
The Euro (EUR) holds steady against the British Pound (GBP), but its momentum remains elusive due to ongoing German political uncertainty. The EUR/GBP exchange rate is currently trading around 0.8575, largely unchanged from Monday's levels.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz's party suffered a setback in regional elections over the weekend, prompting him to describe the result as a 'disaster.' While he has reaffirmed his intention to remain in office and pursue economic reforms, investors remain cautious about the Eurozone economy.
Lower oil prices, however, provide some support for the common currency. Brent crude has fallen below $100 and is now over 8% lower than last week's highs. This decline in energy costs benefits Eurozone economies, which rely heavily on imports, by easing pressure on businesses and consumers.
