Euro Treads Water Against Pound Amid Ongoing German Uncertainty
The Euro (EUR) remains almost flat against the British Pound (GBP), hovering above 0.8570 on Monday, as it struggles to recover from Friday's drop to the 0.8600 area.
This stability comes despite lower oil prices, which have dipped by almost 7% below last week's highs and are currently trading below $100 a barrel for Brent Oil. This decline provides some relief to Eurozone economies, which are net importers, and may offer support to the Euro.
However, the German political uncertainty continues to weigh on the Euro. The centre-right CDU party suffered its worst defeat since 1949 in state elections last weekend, with far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) gaining a significant victory. Chancellor Friedrich Merz acknowledged the loss as 'a disaster', but vowed to remain in office and complete ongoing economic reforms.
Meanwhile, investors are bracing themselves for a wave of monetary policy decisions from major central banks, including the European Central Bank (ECB) and the Bank of England (BoE). The ECB has already hiked interest rates and hinted at further rate increases. This week's key events include the preliminary Eurozone and UK Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) reports on Wednesday.
