Euro Vulnerability Rises on ECB Rate Uncertainty
The European Central Bank's willingness to raise interest rates is creating uncertainty for the Euro. This is according to HSBC, which notes that Europe's exposure to elevated energy costs and disappointing economic data pose challenges for EUR/USD performance and regional growth.
The bank attributes some of this vulnerability to the Federal Reserve's more hawkish messaging at its September meeting. While the relative interest rates story may not drive significant moves in EUR-USD, Europe's greater exposure to high energy costs could weigh on growth and the external balance.
Despite stronger PMI readings, other economic data in September has generally disappointed so far, posing challenges for the Euro. This uncertainty over the ECB's appetite to raise rates is a key concern for EUR/USD performance.
