Euro Zone Economy Defies Expectations with Unexpected Surge
The euro zone economy has shown unexpected resilience in the face of rising energy costs and supply chain disruptions. According to S&P Global's Flash Euro Zone Composite PMI Output Index, business activity across the region accelerated in September at its fastest rate in over three years.
The index rose to 53.1 in September from August's 52.0, defying expectations of a dip to 51.7. The increase was broad-based across geographies, with solid growth registered in both the manufacturing and service sectors.
Growth in Germany, Europe's largest economy, expanded despite firms facing increased inflationary pressures. In France, it grew at its fastest pace in just over two years, driven by a rebound in services demand.
However, the picture was not entirely rosy. Britain, outside the European Union, saw growth cool this month as inflation pressure built, according to its PMI. This comes ahead of finance minister John Healey's first budget next month.
