Euro Zone Inflation Remains Contained, Warns ECB Governor
The European Central Bank's Governing Council member and Portuguese central bank chief Álvaro Santos Pereira says euro zone inflation is not spreading as widely as it did in past episodes. Speaking at a European Economics and Financial Centre event, Pereira noted that while the current inflation trend isn't spreading rapidly, policymakers remain vigilant and closely monitor developments to assess its future trajectory.
The ECB has already raised euro zone interest rates twice this year, with financial markets anticipating at least three further hikes over the next 12 months. Pereira emphasized the need for continued observation, stating, “It doesn’t mean that it could not happen… It’s important for us to notice, and we monitor very closely exactly this in the next few months to see whether this is broadening.”
Pereira is watching several key factors, including a recent surge in natural gas prices, which could reignite inflationary pressures. He also identified the burgeoning artificial intelligence (AI) boom as another significant “shock” that central bankers are grappling with.
