Euro Zone Inflation Surges Above 3%, Cementing ECB Rate Hike Bets
The European Central Bank (ECB) is likely to raise interest rates for the second time this year after inflation in the euro zone rose above 3% in August.
Inflation accelerated to 3.3% from 2.9% in July, driven mainly by higher energy costs due to increased crude oil and natural gas prices, as well as refiners boosting their margins.
The underlying price pressures remained modest, but the core inflation rate, which excludes volatile food and fuel prices, eased slightly to 2.4% from 2.5%, providing some reassurance for policymakers that the energy price surge is not yet triggering rapid inflation.
Financial markets have already priced in the expected interest rate hike on September 10, with investors focusing on the potential future rate path, which is seen as a more complex issue due to differing views on the depth of euro zone's inflation problems.
