Euro Zone Inflation Surges to 3.8%, ECB Hikes Looming
European Central Bank (ECB) policymakers are facing increased pressure to raise interest rates following a surge in euro zone inflation. Inflation rose to 3.8% in September, exceeding expectations of 3.6%, driven primarily by fuel and natural gas costs.
The 'core' figure, which excludes food and fuel prices, rose to 2.5% from 2.4%, largely due to increased services prices.
While the rise in headline inflation is concerning, some policymakers argue that energy costs have been too high for too long, leading to potential second-round effects on prices.
Others caution that a sharp increase in longer-term borrowing costs could curb price growth and that the labour market's relative softness may limit worker demands for pay increases.
