Euro Zone Yields Remain Elevated Ahead of Fed Rate Decision
European government bond yields remained near historic highs on Wednesday as traders prepared for the Federal Reserve's monetary policy decision. The yields, which have been anchored at multi-year peaks, reflect market expectations of an extended cycle of central bank restrictiveness.
The short-term borrowing costs in the euro zone, particularly those with shorter maturities, continued to trade at elevated levels. For instance, the 2-year German bond yield hovered around 3.544%, its highest level since 2011, while the 10-year German bund yield eased slightly from its historic high.
The market attention has shifted towards Washington as traders await the Federal Open Market Committee's policy announcement later in the day. The Fed is expected to raise borrowing costs by 25 basis points, marking its first interest rate hike since mid-2023, with a 92% probability priced in by financial markets.
