Europe Chooses Its Face: Culture or Nature for New Euro Banknotes

The European Central Bank (ECB) has unveiled ten shortlisted designs for the new euro banknotes, which will enter circulation from the end of 2026. The designs focus on two major themes: European culture and the richness of nature.

For the 'European culture' theme, five different designs feature influential figures from history. The 5 euro note would be dedicated to Maria Callas, a Greek-American soprano who revolutionized opera. The 10 euro denomination would be for German composer Ludwig van Beethoven, while the 20 euro note would honour scientist Marie Curie.

The alternative theme focuses on nature, pairing European bird species with river landscapes on each banknote. The reverse side is devoted to the European Union's main institutions. Citizens can cast their vote online to choose between these two themes and help shape the final decision.

Once the consultation has been completed, the ECB will move on to the technical stages required to produce the new banknotes. The aim is to refresh the image of the single currency while maintaining a strong link with Europe's shared values.
