European Equities Bounce Back on Fed Decision Expectations
European equities experienced a notable rebound on Wednesday, surpassing their three-month lows from the previous session. The market's attention was focused on the Federal Reserve's latest interest rate decision and its implications for monetary policy.
The pan-European STOXX 600 rose approximately 0.6%, positioning it for its strongest daily increase in more than a month. This move followed a sustained period of pressure across European markets, weighed down by factors such as elevated energy prices, disruption to Middle Eastern shipping routes, and higher sovereign bond yields.
Major national indices also registered gains. Germany's DAX advanced around 0.3%, while France's CAC 40 and the UK's FTSE 100 each rose approximately 0.6%. Italy's FTSE MIB stood out among major benchmarks, gaining around 0.9%.
The Federal Reserve's policy announcement was a significant near-term reference point for equity and fixed-income markets. Markets had been assigning roughly a 92% probability to a 25 basis point increase in US interest rates, indicating a shift from previous expectations.
