European Gas Prices Plummet as Tanker Routes Around Gulf Bypass Chokepoints
European gas prices continued their decline on Monday, falling over 2% as tankers found alternative routes around Persian Gulf chokepoints. The Dutch front-month TTF benchmark declined by 2.5% to 77.55 euros per megawatt-hour, while Britain's NBP wholesale gas contract dropped by 2.91% to 192.36 pence per therm.
The European Central Bank (ECB) released a study on Monday that found structural shifts in European energy markets have sped up the transmission of wholesale price spikes into euro zone inflation. The ECB determined that changes in wholesale natural gas prices now reach consumer gas inflation within one to three months in over half of euro area countries, a marked acceleration from 2022.
Despite near-term contracts bringing tactical relief on Monday, the conclusions intensify pressure on Frankfurt as headline euro zone inflation remains above 3%. The study highlights the need for monetary policymakers to address the issue, with some economists predicting that inflation may approach 4% by year-end.
