European Salaries Don't Translate to Indian Rupees: A Tale of Purchasing Power Parity
An Indian man living in Finland recently created an online discussion about how European salaries are perceived in India. He used everyday grocery spending to explain Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) and the impact of local living costs.
The man pointed out that a monthly salary of €1,500 may appear equivalent to about ₹1.5 lakh when converted into Indian currency using exchange rates. However, he emphasized that expenses are also higher in Europe and cannot be judged by exchange rates alone.
He compared the cost of living between Finland and India, stating that with 100 Euros in Europe, one can only manage their expenses for at most one to two days. In contrast, the same amount of ₹10,000 to ₹11,000 in India can buy at least two weeks' worth of groceries.
The man's video discussion drew comments from users sharing their own observations about grocery expenses and household costs in Europe. One user noted that basic aata is around 1kg for 1 euro, while another shared an experience of having to pay almost €600 monthly for groceries for a family of three.
