European Shares Edge Higher Amid Middle East Uncertainty
European shares edged higher on Tuesday as energy stocks gained ground due to elevated oil prices caused by Middle East uncertainty. The pan-European STOXX 600 rose 0.1% to 661.39 points, with the energy sector advancing about 1%. Oil prices climbed to their highest level this month as concerns over potential disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz persisted.
Investors remained cautious due to prolonged uncertainty in the region, which could fuel inflationary pressures and complicate expectations for monetary easing by central banks. US President Donald Trump's demands for compensation from Iran have further complicated efforts to reopen the strategically important shipping route.
The rise in fuel prices weighed on travel and leisure stocks, which fell 0.7%, while technology stocks provided some support, gaining 0.4%. Markets are set to focus on key economic data due later this week, including euro zone employment figures and US consumer price inflation figures, which could offer important clues about the strength of economic activity.
Among individual stocks, Alcon jumped 5.7% after raising its full-year earnings forecast.
