European Stocks Gain on UK Homebuilders, Oil Majors
European stocks rose on Monday as investors focused on UK homebuilders, which jumped after the government announced a new loan program to aid first-time buyers. The Stoxx Europe 600 Index climbed 0.5% by 2:17 pm in London.
UK homebuilders Taylor Wimpey plc, Bellway plc, Persimmon plc, and Barratt Redrow plc surged more than 10%, with analysts at JPMorgan Chase & Co describing the loan plan as a potential 'game changer' for the sector. Oil majors also gained as Brent crude traded around $106 per barrel after US President Donald Trump rejected Iran's latest ceasefire proposal.
The mining index dropped 1.4% as gold and other precious metals fell. European stocks are on track to snap a five-month winning streak in September following a global bond selloff intensified by surging energy prices and inflation concerns.
