Europe's Central Bank Launches Pontes Platform for Digital Securities Trading
The European Central Bank (ECB) is taking a significant step towards modernizing securities trading for the digital age. The ECB and national central banks of the euro area have launched a new platform called 'Pontes,' which enables financial institutions to settle digital securities directly using secure central bank money.
Pontes, named after the Latin word for 'bridges,' serves as a link between blockchain networks and traditional central bank money. This is a crucial development in the tokenized financial world, where assets are recorded as digital tokens based on modern blockchain technology (Distributed Ledger Technology, DLT).
The new platform aims to bring stability and trust to the tokenized financial world, helping it achieve a breakthrough. Initially, Pontes will offer basic functions, but it is scheduled to be expanded in stages through 2028. The ECB plans to invest a small portion of its own funds portfolio in tokenized securities to gain first-hand experience across the entire lifecycle of digital securities.
