Europe's Inflation Surges Amid Energy Price Disruptions
Inflation in Europe's four largest economies, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain, accelerated sharply in September, surpassing market expectations.
The main driver of this surge is energy prices, which have increased due to disruptions in crude oil and refined fuel shipments from the Persian Gulf region caused by the ongoing Middle East conflict.
French energy prices soared 21.2% year-over-year in September, while diesel prices set record highs across multiple Eurozone countries.
The European Central Bank (ECB) had anticipated a significant acceleration in inflation this month, and as such, a higher headline reading is unlikely to alter the policy outlook.
Simona Delle Chiaie, chief Eurozone economist at a market research firm, expects the ECB to hold steady in the near term and complete the current hiking cycle with a final increase in December.
