The Stoxx 600 index in Europe fell by 1.1 percent to 635.45 points on Friday, September 18, marking a broad sell-off across various sectors. The losses were led by automobile and telecom shares, with Volkswagen experiencing its biggest one-day drop since September 2025 after slashing its outlook due to one-off items related to Porsche.

The automobile sector fell 3.4 percent, while telecommunications stocks dropped 3.3 percent, their largest single-day decline since April 2025. Airtel Africa was the top decliner in the Stoxx, plummeting 11.3 percent after Bloomberg News reported that its unit Airtel Money is considering downsizing its London initial public offering.

Nestle's shares also fell by 2.6 percent as Russia seized control of the Swiss food giant's local assets. Despite oil prices paring earlier losses on Friday, energy shares still shed 0.7 percent and dropped 0.5 percent for the week.

The European healthcare sector was the best performer this week, followed by insurance, while banks and automobiles were the worst hit. Senior market analyst Daniela Hathorn from Capital.com noted that policymakers are now getting a jump on inflation, and the focus will be whether rate hikes represent insurance against an energy-driven inflation shock or the beginning of a lengthy global tightening cycle.
