Eurozone Inflation Expectations Soar Amid Rising Fuel Prices
Consumers in the Eurozone have increased their inflation expectations for the next year and beyond, according to the latest European Central Bank (ECB) survey. The median respondent in the ECB's Consumer Expectations Survey sees prices growing by 3.0% over the following 12 months, up from 2.9% in July. This increase is likely a result of rising fuel prices caused by the deepening conflict between Iran and other countries.
The survey also shows that expectations for inflation three years ahead increased to 2.9% from 2.7%, and the five-year forecast rose to 2.5% from 2.4%. The ECB has already raised borrowing costs twice this year, and sources suggest that policymakers expect further policy tightening in the months ahead.
