Eurozone Inflation Hits 3.2%, ECB Responds with Interest Rate Hike
The eurozone's inflation rate rose to 3.2% in August, surpassing July's figure by three tenths. This increase is attributed to a sharp rise in energy prices, which skyrocketed to 14.3%, compared to 10.3% from the previous month.
According to Eurostat, services recorded an increase of 3%, while non-energy industrial goods saw their prices rise by 1.2%. In contrast, food, alcohol, and tobacco prices remained stable at 1.2%.
The European Central Bank (ECB) has taken note of these inflationary pressures and responded by raising interest rates by 25 basis points, setting the deposit rate to 2.5%, the main refinancing operations rate to 2.65%, and the marginal lending facility rate to 2.90%.
The rise in energy prices is a significant concern for the ECB, as it continues to monitor inflationary pressures.
