Eurozone Inflation Hits 3.2%, Energy Prices Drive Rise
The Eurozone's inflation rate nudged up to 3.2% in August, surpassing market expectations of 3.3%. This is a slight revision lower than the preliminary estimate of 3.3%, but still marks the highest level since May. The main driver behind this increase was energy price inflation, which rose by 14.3% in August compared to 10.3% in July.
Services inflation remained steady at 3.0% in August, a decrease from 3.3% in July. As a result, core annual inflation eased slightly to 2.4% in August, down from the estimated 2.5% in July. The European Central Bank (ECB) tends to focus on core readings, which may give policymakers some breathing room before making any monetary policy decisions.
However, as price pressures continue to build heading into Q4, the challenge for the ECB will be significant. With inflation persistently above target, expectations for interest rate hikes are likely to grow.
