Eurozone Inflation Remains 'Too High' for ECB Chief Economist
European Central Bank (ECB) Chief Economist Philip Lane has expressed caution regarding the eurozone's inflation rate, currently standing at 3%. Speaking in Ireland on the 18th, Lane stated that this level of inflation is 'still too high' and remains above the ECB's target of 2%.
Noting that the current inflation rate is one percentage point above the target, Lane emphasized that it may seem moderate compared to the double-digit levels seen in 2022. However, from a conventional policy perspective, he considered this level 'quite elevated.'
The ECB has implemented significant rate hikes, lifting policy rates to historically high levels in an effort to combat inflationary pressures. While some market participants anticipate additional rate cuts within the year, Lane's caution suggests that such expectations may be premature.
