Eurozone Inflation Soars as France and Spain Report Highest Rate Hikes

French inflation has picked up pace to its highest level since May this year, driven by rising energy costs. According to data released on August 28, prices in France jumped 4% from a year ago in August, exceeding market expectations. This development comes as Spain's inflation rate surged to more than double the European Central Bank's 2% target.

Spain's inflation reading of 4.5% from a year ago is the fastest since 2023 and just short of the median estimate in a Bloomberg survey. The country continues to boast the fastest economic expansion among the euro zone's biggest members, which may contribute to its higher inflation rate.

The recent uptick in inflation rates in both Spain and France strengthens the case for an interest rate increase next month. As prices continue to rise, central banks may be forced to act to combat inflation and maintain price stability.
