India Joins Polymer Currency Era with RBI Note Rollout
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is planning to introduce polymer currency notes from the next financial year, according to RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra. This move has generated excitement among collectors and enthusiasts, with one Kolkata-based notaphilist showcasing a rare collection of polymer banknotes from around the world.
Deb Kumar Paul, a passionate numismatist, has built an extensive collection of 89 countries' polymer currency notes. He believes that India's entry into the polymer currency era is a moment of historical significance for collectors and citizens alike.
Polymer banknotes are made from a synthetic substrate and are known for their longer life and resistance to moisture and wear. The global journey of polymer currency began in Australia in 1988, with Europe's first polymer note issued by Romania in 1999, Asia's first introduced by Indonesia in 1993, North America's first issued by Mexico in 2001, South America's first introduced in 2004, and Africa's first issued by Zambia in 2003.
Paul considers China's 20 Yuan polymer note, issued in 2022 to mark the Olympic Winter Games, as one of the most beautiful notes in his collection. He also has the latest polymer banknotes issued by St. Helena in 2026.
