Eurozone Interest Rate Hikes Trap Irish Homeowners in Cost-of-Living Crisis
Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank (ECB), recently visited Dublin for the meeting of EU finance ministers under Ireland's EU Presidency. During her visit, she reflected on the economic crash that affected Ireland and suggested that austerity measures could have been introduced over a longer period to alleviate their impact.
Lagarde emphasized that the ECB will decide 'meeting by meeting' whether to hold, increase, or cut interest rates. However, she admitted that cutting rates is unlikely at the moment, making further hikes more probable. The recent quarter-point interest rate hike has led to a 10% rise in mortgage interest repayments over the last year.
The increasing cost of living has pushed mortgage holders into arrears for the first time, with over 12,000 borrowers falling behind on their repayments for the first time in the three months to June. Homeowners are caught in a Catch-22 scenario where rising prices drive up inflation, prompting central banks to raise interest rates.
