Eurozone Producer Prices Decline on Cheaper Energy
The Eurozone's producer price index (PPI) declined by 0.3% month-over-month in June, matching market expectations and reversing May's 0.2% increase. The drop was largely driven by lower energy costs, which fell 1.5% m/m.
However, excluding the energy sector, producer prices actually rose 0.2%, indicating that underlying price pressures remained positive across much of the industrial economy. Intermediate goods prices increased 0.3%, while capital goods and durable consumer goods each rose 0.2%.
The data support the view that inflation pressures are moderating in the Eurozone, which is likely to offer some reassurance for the European Central Bank (ECB). Despite this, underlying pricing power remains intact, with positive ex-energy inflation persisting.
