Eurozone Retail Sales Contraction Sparks Dollar Rally
Europe's largest economy is experiencing weakness in its retail sales market, as data from Eurostat revealed a sharp decline. The latest figures show that Eurozone retail sales fell by 0.6% month-on-month in July, missing consensus estimates of a 0.3% expansion.
The contraction was led by Germany, the Eurozone's largest economy, where retail sales plummeted by 3.4% in July. This decline was also evident in Spain and Italy, with their respective monthly declines reaching -0.9% and -0.3%. These numbers highlight the impact of macroeconomic headwinds on the region.
The Euro depreciated by 0.10% against the US Dollar after the release, with the EUR/USD pair closing at $1.1613. The US Dollar gained momentum due to expectations that the Federal Reserve may adopt a more restrictive policy stance in its upcoming meeting, supported by robust employment figures.
From a technical perspective, the EUR/USD pair continues to reflect market indecision within a defined consolidation range. With the current bullish momentum, the immediate resistance level is at $1.1705, and if broken, would confirm potential for extended upside towards higher valuations.
