Eurozone Yields Surge as ECB Warns of Extended Inflation Period
The Eurozone government bond yields have been rising steadily, reflecting concerns over inflation in the region. The yields for Germany's 10-year Bund climbed above 3.5%, a level not seen since August 2009, while Italian yields reached their highest since late 2023 and French yields hit an 18-year high.
The European Central Bank (ECB) raised interest rates by 25 basis points on Thursday, warning that inflation could persist at elevated levels beyond its target of 2%. ECB President Christine Lagarde called the rate hike a 'no-brainer' and stated that the return to the target, currently expected by the end of 2027, may be delayed further.
The sharp deterioration in the inflation outlook has increased the likelihood of further monetary tightening, with sources suggesting another rate hike could come as soon as October. Markets are now pricing three more ECB hikes by March, followed by another by June.
